Trooper reinstated after cavity search

AUSTIN (AP) — The Texas Department of Public Safety has reinstated a trooper that it fired for conducting a roadside cavity search during a traffic stop.

DPS Director Steve McCraw announced on Friday that he was rehiring Trooper Jennie Bui after a grand jury chose not to indict her.

McCraw said the criminal and administrative investigation determined that Bui was following orders. But he said her actions constituted misconduct and she will be suspended for 60 days and undergo additional training.

A dash-cam video showed Bui’s supervisor Nathaniel Turner ordering her to internally probe two women on the side of the road in a search for contraband. Turner had stopped them for speeding. The women filed a lawsuit for invasion of privacy.

McCraw said Turner’s actions were unacceptable and violated DPS policy.
