Could be year’s hottest day — so far

AUSTIN (KXAN) – One week into summer, and record breaking heat is already forecast for Central Texas.

By early afternoon Friday, the temperature had already climbed to 101 degrees in Austin and 104 in Llano. The June 28, 1923, record of 104 degrees is forecast to fall by late afternoon, as the high temperature is expected to reach 105 degrees at Camp Mabry.

The 1956 record of 103 at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport — back when ABIA was an Air Force base — is also expected to be broken.

It may be just as hot again Saturday as a strong ridge of high pressure continues to influence area weather. However, the bubble of hot air is forecast to shift westward by Sunday, allowing a rare summer cold front to move into Central Texas.

Since May 1,area  medics have responded to 64 heat-related incidents. In 2012 the number was 93. In 2011 it was 107.

The weak cold front is forecast to bring temperatures back down into the 90s from Sunday through the 4th of July. In addition, a trough of low pressure aloft may produce some widely scattered showers or thunderstorms during this same time frame.
