Ice skating rink helps Make-A-Wish

AUSTIN (KXAN) – If you’re looking to ring in the holiday spirit with a winter classic, lace up your skates. On Wednesday, several outdoor ice skating rinks are kicking off the season this Thanksgiving, including the Barton Creek Resort Spa .

“We waited two days for the rink to open, so we were ready to jump on the ice,” said Regina Edwards from Carrollton, near Dallas. Her family is in Austin visiting family for Thanksgiving.

Barton Creek Resort and Spa has the largest outdoor ice skating rink in Austin. It’s the third annual ” Holiday Lights and Ice ” held on a frozen slab, which is about 4,100 square feet in size.

The rink is open now through Jan. 6.

“It’s awesome, it’s like you’re skating, then you’re asking yourself, ‘Hey, it’s not winter yet’ because they made it feel so much like winter that you just think it’s winter,” said Edwards’ youngest son, Luke. “Then your mind tells you it’s not but you don’t agree with it.”

The rink is a refrigerated floor which is set to 1 degree Fahrenheit. Organizers said with the Texas warm winter, it’s how they’re able to keep it cool so it won’t melt.

“It’s so much fun out here and you know the kids are having a good time. Everybody has fun [and] gets in the holiday spirit,” said Julia McQueen, director of marketing for the resort and spa. “We’re doing it for a good cause to benefit Make-A-Wish F oundation .”

Part of the proceeds will go to the Make-A-Wish of Central South Texas .  A dollar from every ticket sale will go to the organization.

“Oh, it’s awesome, I know this is just a great opportunity to bring the public in here and also to bring about awareness for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and to hopefully bring in donations,” said Kelly Robles.

Doctors diagnosed her daughter, 5-year-old Gabrielle, with leukemia two years ago. She is now in remission, but while she was battling cancer, the Robles family got to go Disney World.

“It was devastating for our family but it also brought us a lot closer together,” said Robles. “It’s an unfortunate situation, but it’s foundations like Make-A-Wish that have made it an awesome experience and journey for us. ”

The skating rink is open Wednesday from 4 – 11 p.m. and on Thanksgiving Day from 2 – 9:30 p.m.

Costs for children to skate Monday through Thursday are $17 and on weekends, admission is $19. For adult skaters, costs are $23 per person during the week and $26 on weekends. Prices are less for members of Barton Creek Resort, at $14 per child and $19 per adult, any day of the week. Season passes cost $155 for adults and children, or $105 for Barton Creek Resort members.

There will also be S’mores available, activities for children and hot chocolate.

Skating rink hours are subject to change depending on weather conditions. The public is asked to call 512-329-4-43 before arriving to check the latest skating rink hours of operation.
