Church mourns teens killed in crash

BURNET (KXAN) – At a worship service less than 24 hours before they were killed, Sierra and Caleb Hardin sang songs of worship and hung out with their friends at their Burnet church.

“Both Caleb and Sierra were tremendous friends to their peers- they loved their Church and most importantly they loved their God,” said Pastor Kyle Byrd, of the Church at The Epicenter, where the Hardin children were actively involved in their church youth group. “You’re so close to those kinds of kids- you build ministries on those kind of kids and so when you lose them, there’s no way to prepare- you can’t prepare there’s nothing you can say.”

Byrd led a worship service Friday evening where more than 100 people gathered to honor Sierra, 16, and Caleb, 14, both killed Thursday afternoon when the car Sierra was driving slammed in to the back of a school bus on Highway 29.

“When I finally was able to verify who it was- my knees buckled,” said Byrd. “I had to sit down.”

The teenagers were well known in the tight-knit Burnet and Bertram communities. Sierra was a cheerleader at Burnet High School. Caleb liked to hunt and play video games, according to his pastor.

“Her smile is just beautiful- we don’t need lights in the room when she’s here,” said Byrd. “He could talk about video games like most people talk about today’s weather- I mean, he loved games.”

Byrd said the siblings were very close and lived with their grandparents in Bertram. He said they both loved Christian music and were very strong in their faith. He spent much of the day Friday comforting the children’s friends and family.

“There are no answers- anybody that says they know why this happened is not telling the truth.  We don’t know- we know it’s an accident- we don’t know why it happened but it did,” said Byrd. “What we know is these two kids loved each other- they loved their friends they loved their Church and they loved their God- there is no question where these two kids are right now.”

A community visitation is planned for Saturday night at Edgar Funeral Home in Burnet. A funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Burnet High School auditorium.
