Williamson County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is getting colorful for a cause. Friday, February 3, is National Wear Red Day, and EMS personnel will be wearing red t-shirts under their uniforms to show their support for women’s heart health.

National Red Wear Day is the first Friday in February, and this coming National Wear Red Day on February 3, 2017, will mark 15 years since the initial National Wear Red Day.

“Williamson County EMS is dedicated not just to treating illness and disease, but preventing it,” states Mike Knipstein, EMS director. “That is why we are wearing red and invite people to join us in raising awareness about the number one killer in women.”

Heart disease and stroke cause one in three deaths among women each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds. In 2016, WilCo EMS responded to 212 calls for a suspected stroke and 412 calls of chest pain and possible heart attach for women ages 35 and over.

Fortunately, that statistic can change because 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. The American Heart Association encourages women to know their numbers. The five numbers that all women should know to take control of their heart health are: Total Cholesterol, HDL (good) Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI). Knowing these numbers can help women and their healthcare provider determine their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases.
