Man charged in sex attack at laundry

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Desperate screams from a woman being assaulted at a West Austin apartment laundry room alerted a maintenance man and led police to the man charged in the attack, an arrest affidavit released Wednesday says.

According to the document, a woman who went to do laundry at the Ridge Apartments on Saturday night saw a man paying attention to his cell phone while sitting in a chair near one of the machines. She loaded her own laundry then left.

The woman returned two hours later to retrieve her clothes and found the laundry room — accessible only by a key — dark, the affidavit said.

When she went to flip the switch, she was grabbed from behind and punched several times, the document said. When the man attempted to remove her clothing, the woman began kicking, punching scratching and screaming, the document said.

The apartment maintenance man man heard with woman “screaming bloody murder,” the affidavit said. The room was still dark because the light was broken out. The maintenance man could not locate his key so he banged on the door in an effort to break through it, the afffidavit said.

Then, the man ran from the room toward a woods near the complex at 6805 Wood Hollow Drive. Police were called, and with the help of a police dog, found car keys near where the man was last seen, the affidavit said. Police matched the key to a vehicle and found the man with scratches on his arms hiding inside, the affidavit said.

They also found an article of women’s clothing.

Daleph Romero Albarran, 30, was arrested and charged with attempted sexual assault. He told police he had been at the laundry but did not recall attacking the woman.

His bail is set at $20,000.
