Austin activist Anne McAfee dies at 82

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Austin activist Anne McAfee has passed away after an apparent stroke during Senator Wendy Davis’ filibuster debate on June 25. She was 82.

Anne Elizabeth (Castleberry) McAfee was born in 1930.

Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell issued a statement Saturday saying “Anne McAfee was all Austin. She was a dedicated community servant and a strong voice on many important issues, for which she fought until the end.”  Mayor Leffingwell continued saying, “Anne’s work will reverberate through the multitudes of people she touched. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to her family and many friends.”

The Travis County Democratic Party also issued a statement on their Facebook page saying, “Anne McAfee, longtime activist and community leader passed this morning at home with her family. If you have something positive to share about how she impacted your life, please share it with us here. We will have more information soon.”

McAfee is the niece of Texas folklorist John Henry Faulk. She was a lifelong Austinite and has been active in politics since volunteering at age 13 on Minnie Fisher Cunningham’s 1944 gubernatorial campaign.
