Reward offered for serial rape suspect

AUSTIN (KXAN) – A $1,000 reward was offered Tuesday for information leading to the arrest of the suspect in as many as eight sexual assaults in the area since August 2012.

“At this point, we’ve exhausted leads in trying to find him and we need the public’s assistance,” said Veneza Bremner with the Austin Police Department. “We don’t want anyone else to be attacked injured or hurt or assaulted by this man.”

The most recent charge against Edgar Casas, 25, accuses him of  the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in her apartment complex’s laundry room in November.

The girl had been asked by her mother to move a load of laundry, and when entered the room, she noticed a man sitting on a table. According to the report, he asked her a question about rent prices and where the office was. After pointing to the courtyard of the complex, she said saw the man leave the room.

As she went to move the laundry, she said the same man came back in and grabbed her from behind, put his hand over her mouth, then raped her.

“We have been here for a year and a half now and we have heard of stuff, but nothing to this magnitude,” said Carlos Alvarado who works at a nearby hair salon. “A lot of people are talking about it…we had customers in here talking about it, and that’s how we found out.”

According to detectives, in most instances Casas allegedly approached women in parking lots or laundry rooms of apartment complexes — primarily in North Austin. Four of the cases were reported in areas near Interstate 35 and U.S. Highway 183.

The other four happened near Lamar Boulevard between Rundberg and Braker lanes.

Because of the similarities to the other cases, the girl was shown a photo lineup and identified Casas as the man who sexually assaulted her.

Police are anyone who knows of Casas’ whereabouts to please call 911 or Crimestoppers at 472-TIPS.
