5 students hurt in acid bomb at school

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Five students and three adults at Burnet Middle School were taken to the hospital Friday in what officials described as an attempt “to create a acid bomb.”

AISD Police Chief Eric Mendez said the school was evacuated for a brief period after a chemical substance was found in a student restroom. Fire officials were called to the school and students were allowed back inside by 10:45 a.m. The restroom was cordoned off.

“It’s a serious incident,” the chief said. “Whether or not (it was planned as) a prank, it’s still a serious incident.”

The chief said his agency along with the Austin Police Department and arson investigators were looking into the matter. He said the incident happened in a boys’ restroom. He said a plastic container with acid was found in the restroom.

The container was described as an acid bomb. Another official said the people who were transported suffered burning eyes and symptoms of nausea. The students had the most severe reaction, the official said.

Officials had not immediately determined exactly what the acid substance was.
