Kyle looks at major road construction

KYLE, Texas (KXAN) – In the past decade, more then 20,000 people have moved into the City of Kyle and that’s leaving city officials trying to make sure their infrastructure is up to the challenge.

“Some of the streets being small is definitely a problem,” said one Kyle driver.

The City’s top priority at the moment is road reconstruction.

“Old county roads that were never designed to handle the volume of traffic they’re being asked to handle right now,” said Jerry Hendrix, Kyle’s communication director.

The City is considering a bond election to pay for the maintenance and expansion of five major roads in the area:  Lehman, Burleson Road, Marketplace Avenue, Goforth and Bunton Road.

Construction on all five roads would cost homeowners but the City wants to minimize that cost by breaking the projects up.

“A phasing program where the first year they would engineer the roads,” explains Hendrix.  “Only issue is the debt for that part of the program and then move on year-by-year, one road at a time.”

Kyle homeowners could see their property taxes increase to cover the cost.

“Property taxes are cheaper here than in Austin, so spending a few extra dollars is fine by me,” said Michael Borst, a Kyle resident.
