Woman killed on I-35 service road

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Austin Police are investigating a pedestrian fatality on the I-35 service road near Slaughter Lane early Sunday Morning.

A passerby called 9-1-1 after they saw a body on the road. Police responded and found a deceased female.

It appeared the victim had been hit by a car around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The driver of the car came back to the scene according to police. APD is investigating the crash.

The name of the victim was not available. It is unknown if alcohol was a factor.

This is the 51st traffic fatality in 2012.

11 of the city’s 51 fatalities have happened between 6 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. on Sunday.  In June APD set up two initiatives to reduce the amount of deaths during this time and also reduce the number of pedestrian deaths in Austin.

Sunday morning’s death is the first since APD launched their Sunday safety initiative .
