The Williamson County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office is now issuing “The Texas Classic,” the new general-issue license plate from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV).
“We began distributing the popular black and white plates in all of our offices this month,” said Deborah Hunt, the Williamson County tax assessor-collector.
The TxDMV requested tax assessor-collectors exhaust their inventory of the old plate design before distributing the new one to save taxpayer money and avoid waste.
The Texas Classic includes:
• Two new, high-visibility security threads join the existing security features embedded in the plate sheeting. Texas is the first state in the country to provide dual security threads, making it easier for law enforcement to spot legitimate plates.
• Bigger plate numbers. The plate letters and numbers are a full inch wide and just over 2 ½ – inches tall.
• A new license plate pattern. The plates are issued with three letters followed by four numbers. By keeping the letters and numbers separate in the alpha-numeric pattern, the seven- character license plate number is easier to remember. This is convenient for plate owners, and also provides better recall for law enforcement and citizen witnesses.
License plates are replaced every seven years due to a loss in reflectivity.
Truck license plates also will sport The Texas Classic design when the current plate design has been exhausted.  In September 2011, truck and passenger vehicle owners began paying the same fixed rate for registration, which eliminated the need for two different types of general-issue plates.
“We will no longer be issuing separate license plates for trucks.  What’s good about this change is that the state name will be as large on the pickup truck plates as cars,” Ms. Hunt said.
To add the word “truck” on license plates the TxDMV needed to reduce the size of the state name, which sometimes limited whether a truck owner could use a license plate frame. State law does not allow “Texas” to be completely covered by a plate frame.
In addition to The Texas Classic license plate, vehicle owners may choose from a number of specialty places.  Information on specialty plate designs is available on the TxDMV website at www.TxDMV.gov.
