Mold found at RRISD elementary school

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Ten days before the doors re-open at Purple Sage Elementary School , Round Rock Independent School District officials are working on removing mold found in several classrooms.

The problem was discovered last week by campus staff who noticed there was an odor from some of the classrooms. Upon investigation, district staff discovered what appeared to be mold residue under the carpet.

Specialists were hired to take samples of the substance and to test the air quality.

Yesterday, the district received lab test results showing there were three different mold species (Aspergillus, Wallemis sebi, and Stachybotrys) in numerous classrooms.

District officials said the mold abatement process will take approximately 10 days and the campus should re-open in time for the first day of school, August 27

The campus is officially closed to the public until cleaning is complete.

Teachers and staff have been temporarily relocated to the Old Hopewell Building, located next to the district’s Administration Building.

The campus’ student registration process has been relocated to Grisham Middle School, located at 10805 School House Lane in Austin. Families needing to register their children for Purple Sage ES may complete required paperwork at Grisham Middle School.
