LEANDER  — A team of hikers, including Elanor and Andrew Straight of Leander, will donate their time, finances and physical capabilities this summer to hike the Sangre De Christo Range in southern Colorado, using the trek as a platform to raise funds and awareness for World Vision’s “End Malaria” campaign.

“My wife Elanor and I are hiking in memory of my father-in-law, Doug Rimmer, who is from Westcliffe, Colo. and passed away last year,” said Andrew, the 29-year-old associate director of bands for Leander Middle School.

“We have two children under the age of five and we want to do our part to save the lives of the thousands of children struck down by this disease, said Elanor,a 28-year-old childcare provider.

The 5 Summits Trek Team will be hiking from July 6 through 16, reaching the summits of at least five peaks of 12,000-plus feet in that time to support the activism network of World Vision, and their efforts to end malaria overseas.

World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.

Hikers will engage in creative activism, fundraising and garnering support from their friends and families for their effort. The sacrificial acts of preparation, endurance and fundraising provide participants an opportunity to share the heart behind the cause, inviting any and all to join the campaign in some way.

The goal of World Vision’s End Malaria campaign is to contribute to a 75 percent reduction in malaria infections and near-zero preventable deaths from malaria by 2015, coordinating efforts with governments, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and individuals for the cause. Malaria kills nearly 2,000 children every day, and simple, existing solutions such as bed nets can save lives.
