Businesses gear up as F1 fever spreads

AUSTIN (KXAN) – With the construction of  the Formula 1 track in Elroy under way and the November Grand Prix race growing closer, so is the excitement.

Formula 1 racing fever is taking over Austin.

This weekend’s “Formula Expo” will give a glimpse into the Grand Prix world.

One way fans are getting their speed-thrill fix is going to K-1 Speed, an electric go-kart racing track.

The track mirrors a real Grand Prix track, giving thrill-seekers the chance to get behind the wheel. The go-karts’ speed range from 20 mph to 30 mph.

Just like the pros, safety is No. 1 and helmets are always worn. You never know when someone might crash, and K-1 Speed said people do.

K-1 Speed just opened their doors six weeks ago, and they chose this location for a reason.

“We chose Austin because of the Formula 1 track coming here in November,” said K-1 Speed Manager Mike Davis. “We thought it was a fantastic time to break us out right about now, to get everyone built up for the racing that is coming to Austin.”

With many F1 fans living outside of the United States,  K-1 Speed workers said they believe this first race will attract new fans in Texas.

“Once everyone starts to see the number of people come from outside the United States, who are coming straight to Austin for nothing but this race, they’ll begin to understand what a really good boom it is for the city,” said Davis.

Jessica Clouse’s stepfather is a huge F1 fan and knows what a big deal the races are.

“He is super excited,” said Clouse. “He is really happy for the first one and can’t wait to go watch it in November.”

Even though Clouse said she’s not a big racing fan, all the talk around town is changing her mind.

“It would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” she said. “It’s awesome because it’s so close now, and you don’t have to travel halfway around the world to see it.”
