Leander buys water treatment plant

Thursday, January 5, 2012, 07:34 PM

The City of Leander officially purchased Thursday the Sandy Creek Regional Water Treatment Plant, Finance Director Robert Powers told the Leander City Council Thursday night at the request of Leander Mayor John Cowman.

“We’re very proud, we’re in charge of our own destiny now,” Cowman said.

The City Council voted last year to spend $36 million on a water treatment plant that provides drinking water to its more than 30,000 residents.

The Sandy Creek Regional Water Treatment Plant is one of more than 20 utilities the Lower Colorado River Authority is selling. The LCRA has said the plants cost $3 million more each year to maintain than the authority gets back in rate payments.

The 10 -year-old Sandy Creek plant pumped more than 175 million gallons of water through its filters and pipes in July. Five employees work at the plant, which is operated by the Brazos River Authority.

The city intends to try to contract with the authority to maintain the status quo for now, but will likely move to operate the plant on its own eventually.
