Hays Co. children take reading to dogs

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) – Children in San Marcos are learning to read with help from mans best friend.

Animal Reading Friend program at Travis Elementary School allows students to choose their books and practice their reading skills by reading to dogs.

“When reading with a dog, the children relax; they forget about feeling self-conscious and nervous,” Travis Librarian Jan Rudnicki said.

Delta Society Pet Partners of San Marcos runs the program. The program has openings for people who want to get involve anyone who wishes to take part with ARF must be registered “Pet Partners” with the Delta Society.

San Marcos Mayor Daniel Guerrero honored Travis Elementary School and members of the Delta Society this week for the Animal Reading Friend program.

Organizers say children who practice by reading to animals have shown marked improvement in both confidence and comprehension.

Program organizers also say when students read to Pet Partners (ARFs) they become more relaxed, have more confidence and enjoy time with their unconditional loving friend.
