Bonfire lit at City Hall overnight

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Austin Fire Department responded to a fire call at City Hall around 3:30 a.m. on Thursday morning after a 911 caller reported a bonfire there.

Austin firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which was on the City Hall plaza. Police also responded to the call.

The fire was reportedly about 5 feet high, according to AFD Capt. Matt Cox.  It was built with tree branches, he said.

The fire was on the concrete part of the plaza and had little danger of spreading, Cox said.

Firefighters and police questioned people at the scene. Police were not aware if any charges had been filed.

The Occupy Austin protesters have been camping in the City Hall plaza since early October. It is not known if one of the protesters started the fire.
