18-wheeler fire shuts down I-35N

AUSTIN (KXAN) – A tractor trailer fire on I-35N sent black smoke billowing through the sky on Wednesday night.

Initial reports indicate the driver of the 18-wheeler noticed the truck was on fire just after 7:30 p.m.  The driver was able to pull over and get out of the truck at I-35N and Grand Avenue Parkway.

Within minutes, the truck was fully engulfed in flames.  The Pflugerville Fire Department was able to get a handle on the fire by 8 p.m.

According to officials, the truck was carrying auto parts and that the items were not hazardous.  The driver was not injured.

Drivers stuck behind the truck managed to get some up-close video of the 18-wheeler on fire and one witness said she heard several “explosions” while the truck was burning.

The northbound lanes of the interstate was closed for about one hour while crews worked on cleaning up the mess.
