AUSTIN — A hotly debated bill aimed at banning so-called puppy mills in Texas passed the House of Representatives Wednesday morning.

Debate pitted the bill’s sponsor, veteran State Rep. Senfronia Thompson, D-Houston, against freshman State Rep. David Simpson.

The outspoken east Texas Republican freshman insisted the bill would infringe on dog breeders.

State Reps. Dawnna Dukes, D-Austin;  Donna Howard, D-Austin; Elliott Naishtat, D-Austin; Eddie Rodriguez, D-Austin; Mark Strama, D-Austin; State Rep. Paul Workman, D-Austin; all voted in favor of the measure.

State Rep. Jason Isaac, R-Dripping Springs, joined with many other rural representatives voting against the measure.

If we already have a law against Cruelty to Animals than there is no need for going into puppy business. If we can bring some strict rules to save them than that would be good.

I don’t believe the government should be going into the puppy business.
We already have Cruelty to Animal laws to handle any abused animal cases. If you see an animal being abused call 911. The most inhuman law on the book is the one stopping horses from being processed for human consumption. Now horses dying from cancer, etc…. have to be shipped to Mexico or Canada to be put down. The conditions in Mexico are not good for these horses. What was once an inexpensive way to have a horse put down is now a very cruel way. The alternative is to pay a vet to put the horse down and a large disposal fee for the body.

Hoping they (including my fellow Republicans) vote AGAINST puppy mills! Listen, if the “breeders” they are concerned about are legit .. they’ll be fine and not classified as a puppy mill. Not guilty – no worries.

They should all be made to watch a video of horrific puppy mills and then be sent to the floor to vote.

I will not be vote for someone that is too stupid to see the difference between a loving breeder who LOVES the breed and animals vs. a puppy mill where they live in horrific surroundings and basically make money for people that are too lazy to work themselves.

Signed,
Conservative Animal Advocate =)
