Firefighting crews from Bluebonnet Fire, Bastrop Fire, 3N1 Fire, 5 points Fire, Elgin Fire, Heart of Pines Fire, McDade Fire, Paige Fire, Travis Co ESD11, with a total of 75 firefighters, are battling the fire.

Officials say responders will likely let the fire burn itself out. A source with Austin Police says fireworks can be heard popping off.

KXAN called American Fireworks, a female employee answered telling KXAN, “I have to go, there’s a fire.” Officials tell KXAN an employee made the initial call when the fire started.

“An employee reporting hearing fireworks going off in the back of the warehouse area of the building. As the call was being dispatched the employee reported smoke in the building,” Dawn Adams with Bastrop County Fire said.

The official also pointed out that American Fireworks is known for their safe practices.

Police have closed eastbound lanes of highway 71 and all lanes of highway 21. Traffic is being diverted onto FM 1209.

A KXAN viewer tells us the smoke can be seen from Elgin where he resides.

Firework sales recently became legal again, but only for the Fourth of July season.

Travis County Fire Marshal Hershel Lee announced that people may buy and use fireworks for personal use, including often-restricted fireworks such as “rockets with sticks” or “missiles with fins.”

As of June 11, 2013, the Commissioners Court has no legal basis to restrict the sale of fireworks this July 4 holiday season because the spring rains helped to ease the drought.

KXAN interviewed American Fireworks owner Chester Davis, earlier this month. In the interview David said he is thankful for the drought’s abatement.

“It’s going to make for a tremendous fireworks season if we continue on the pace we’re on where we have green grass and get a little more rain between here and the fourth of July,” Davis said.

KXAN has a crew on scene and we’ll update you as more information becomes available.
