County Humane Society takes in more than 35 dogs from closing breeding facility

The Humane Society of Williamson County has taken in more than 35 dogs from a dog breeder in Bell County who recently closed her business.

The dogs, including chihuahuas, poodles, Pomeranians, Scottish terriers and Pembroke corgis, were taken in by the society Wednesday. The dogs are being assessed for medical needs and will be available for adoption Saturday at 11 a.m.

“This breeding facility, along with many others nationwide, may not necessarily be considered a puppy mill; nonetheless, the animal conditions were heartbreaking, to say the least,” Eran Fehily, a Humane Society representative, said in a release about the dogs.

In the release, Fehily went on to say that, “Many of the dogs have come in to HSWC in poor physical condition, needing dental care, vaccinations, and significant grooming work. Dogs were seen with matted hair covering their entire bodies, causing significant discomfort and potential skin and health concerns.”

Fehily added that several of the female dogs were pregnant and will be given foster homes immediately until their puppies are born.

Fehily said the breeder decided to close the facility after seeing two other Bell County facilities close in September and November. The facility that closed in September faced legal charges, Fehily said, but the other two did not.

“It’s much easier if they surrender the animals,” she said.

The Humane Society of Williamson County operates a no-kill animal shelter on 22 acres at 10930 E. Crystal Falls Parkway in Leander. The society is a nonprofit organization, funded by donations, grants and modest fees for services. It receives no government funding. For more information, visit www.hswc.net.
