AUSTIN (KXAN) – Family members and the Austin cycling community gathered Saturday morning to remember a man killed while riding his bike earlier this year.

In May, John Fusselman, 67, was riding on the shoulder of Bee Cave Road when a car hit and killed him. Witnesses say the driver may have been blinded by the sun.

Members of the local nonprofit “Please Be Kind to Cyclists” and Fusselman’s friends also attended the tribute.

John Fusselman and his son share the same name. Fusselman said he does not want a situation like this to happen to anyone else.

“If drivers aren’t charged and they’re negligent and they’re not paying attention, it’s just not fair to the families involved,” he said.

In May, one of Fusselman’s friends told KXAN that the avid cyclist was likely out on a 125-mile ride, which was normal for him. His family says he could ride 750 miles in five days.

“He had so much life left,” Fusselman said. “It’s unfair that he was taken so soon.”
