Men with terror-related charges went to school in Round Rock ISD

ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — The two Central Texas men facing charges that they provided material support to terrorists attended high school in the Round Rock Independent School District.

Documents say one of the men, Rahatul Khan, is a U.S. citizen and became one around 2002. He was born in Bangladesh.

Round Rock ISD also confirms Khan went to McNeil High School and graduated in 2009.

According to court documents, Khan eventually went on to go to college at the University of Texas.

The other man who faces charges in a terrorism case also has a Round Rock tie.

The criminal complaint says that man — Michael Wolfe or “Faruq” — was born in Houston, which is also where he was arrested.

But Round Rock ISD also confirms Wolfe went to Round Rock High School for a time. A yearbook shows he was a freshman at the school in 2007.

KXAN tried to contact family of the men but have not been able to get anyone to talk.

Public records and information KXAN has obtained indicate Khan’s mother has an active medical license. KXAN is not naming the mother because there is no indication that she was connected to any alleged crimes.

Information associated with that license also shows her specialty is psychiatry and she has hospital privileges at Fort Hood.

The criminal complaint does not mention the involvement of parents in any crimes and even says Khan may have had some conflict with parents.

Rahatul Ashikim Khan, 23, was arrested Tuesday at his home on Pebblestone Trail in Round Rock. Authorities say he conspired with others to recruit people who would “travel overseas to support terrorist activities including committing violent jihad.”

The charges accuse Khan of connecting a confidential FBI source with co-conspirators who eventually discussed the secret source’s “passport and possible routes to move [the source] into Somalia to join al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-affiliated , [terrorist organization].”

The documents also say the FBI source met with Khan in Austin, in an unrecorded meeting. Investigators believe Khan said that “he could not wait to spill blood. Khan said that he was actively searching for recruits for [a conspirator] and he was the only person he knew of doing this.”

In a separate case, Michael Todd Wolfe, also known as Faruq, 23, of Austin, was arrested as he prepared to board a flight to Europe. Officials say he was planning to travel to the Middle East “to provide his services to radical groups engaged in armed conflict in Syria.”

According to the federal criminal complaint, Wolfe told an undercover investigator that he was doing “Cross-Fit” to physically prepare for jihad.

Wolfe and the undercover agent began communicating in late 2013. Court documents detail their conversations as well as Wolfe’s plans to fly his family from Texas to Denmark under the guise of attending a concert.
