AFD holds wildfire prevention workshop

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Central Texas has been very dry lately, increasing the chances of dangerous wildfires. Saturday marked National Wildfire Preparedness Day.

The Austin Fire Department held a Wildfire Preparedness Workshop Saturday at UT’s J.J. Pickle Research Campus in North Austin.

Participants wanted to learn what they can do to protect their homes.

“We’re kind of moving into our summer fire season,” said Captain Josh Portie with Austin Fire Department. “We’ve already seen an increase in fire activity across the state. With the response that we’re seeing today in the number of attendees that we’re seeing today, it shows that it is still important to everyone.”

So many people turned out for the event, organizers were required to move the program to a bigger venue on campus.
