Voter registration deadline fast approaching

The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 5 general election is fast approaching. Those wishing to vote must register by Monday, Oct. 7 by filling out a registration form from the Texas Secretary of State website at votetexas.gov. Early voting will run from Oct. 21 to Nov. 1.

After legislation passed by the Texas Legislature in 2011, this will be the first election in which voters will be required to show a photo ID. A press release on the Secretary of State website said, “While pending review within the judicial system, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its opinion in Shelby County v. Holder, which effectively ended all pending litigation. As a result, voters are now required to present an approved form of photo identification in order to vote in all Texas Elections.”

Qualified voters without an approved photo ID may obtain a free Election Identification Card from DPS, according to the Secretary of State. More info can be found at dps.texas.gov. More information is available online at www.KeepCalmVoteOn.com
