Tomball, Magnolia high school students start drive to help needy

The students, from Concordia Lutheran, Tomball, Tomball Memorial and Magnolia West high schools, are members of Tomball Magnolia Young Life and Concordia Lutheran’s youth group.

“They want to do something to change the world and they want to do something big,” said Brad Bartlett, a Hockley resident who is volunteering to help the students.

Bartlett runs Resale with a Purpose in Tomball, which is a Christian-based charity that donates its profits from its resale store to the community. The store is one of the sponsors of the drive, in addition to Concordia Lutheran and Tomball Magnolia Young Life.

The students have named the drive MissionWarmth and are collecting coats for men, women and children; sleeping bags; blankets; towels; and toiletry items, said Luke Knowles, a senior at Magnolia West High School, who is one of the students organizing the drive.

The group plans to set up more than a dozen donation boxes in various locations in the area by Nov. 7, including Woodforest Bank and Community Bank in Tomball and Concordia Lutheran High School, and collect the items until Dec. 7.

The students will take the items in December to three shelters in downtown Houston— Covenant House Houston, Star of Hope Mission and Open Door Mission.

“I am so impressed with these kids,” Bartlett said. “They are amazing. The leadership of these kids is remarkable.”

The students have set up a Facebook page for the drive, www.facebook.com/missionwarmthtx.
