Road rage incident on RM 620 results in arrest

An Austin man was arrested after firing a handgun at another car during what has been classified as a road rage incident on RM 620 last week. The bullet shattered the passenger side window of another driver’s 1999 Lexus.

No one was injured but one local mom says she will think twice about rendering aid again at an accident.

Steiner Ranch resident Lisa Olsen and her family were heading home last Wednesday night when they saw two vehicles pulled to the center of RM 620 near Comanche Trail.

Wanting to offer assistance, the Olsens turned on their hazard lights got out of their vehicle, not realizing that one driver had a handgun and had just used it.

Olsen said the driver of a silver Dodge, who was later identified as Donathan Harris, 33, was pacing and really upset and saying “I was trying to get in and he wouldn’t let me in… I (expletive) took a shot at him.”

At that point, Olsen didn’t think he was talking about a gun.

Within minutes, several police cars arrived and an officer approached the Olsen’s truck, gun drawn, asking if they had any weapons.

Olsen said that is when it dawned on her that the one driver had a gun.

Upon further investigation at the scene, Harris admitted firing a shot. Officers searched Harris for weapons and placed him in the back of a patrol car. Deputies subsequently found two handguns and live ammunition in the suspect’s car.

Harris told deputies that his father, his wife and their 5-year-old son were on their way to eat at a restaurant when the driver of the Lexus rammed them repeatedly and he fired a single shot at them in defense to protect his family.

According to the affidavit, Harris told deputies that he fired the gun from the driver’s seat, across the front of his father in the passenger seat and toward the Lexus.

However, the other driver’s story differed on several key points. Stephen Johnson, 66, who was driving the Lexus, said he was driving southbound in the left lane when Harris quickly drove around him and cut him off. Several moments later, Johnson says he heard a gunshot and saw his passenger window explode.

According to Johnson’s report, Harris exited his vehicle and pointed a gun at him and said, “Do you want me to finish ya?!”

Following the on-scene investigation, deputies arrested Harris on a charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon — a 2nd Degree Felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

Two hours later, Olsen’s husband drove the family home went back to continue helping with the investigation.

Lisa Olsen says she didn’t think twice about helping at the scene of the accident, especially because Four Points is a quiet area. But she said she will think twice if there is a next time.
