Sheriff: Murder suspect killed himself

BURNET COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) – The Burnet County Sheriff has confirmed one of two capital murder suspects in a deadly shooting and house fire killed himself in the Burnet County Jail Saturday.

Sheriff W.T. Smith told KXAN News the lead investigator identified the body of Gregory Mark Currie, 30, during an autopsy at the medical examiner’s office Sunday morning. Smith said Currie tore a bed sheet in half and used part of it to hang himself from the shower head in his jail cell.

“It’s a sad thing for me,” said Sheriff Smith. “You have an individual who lost all hope.”

Texas Rangers have stepped in to investigate the jail death, and the Sheriff says he sent a brief report to state jail inspectors Saturday night.

Smith said like all inmates, Currie went through a medical screening when he arrived and was specifically asked if he had any thoughts of killing himself. Jail employees said there were no signs of suicidal thoughts.

The suspect was being kept in a “separation cell” by himself and Smith says jailers were checking on him every 30 minutes.

“As a man, I considered what he was facing. I wish he had sought spiritual help,” said Smith who is also a pastor.

Saturday night law enforcement and jail officials remained silent about the death.

At the time, the public jail records online indicated the two male suspects, Gregory Mark Currie and Juston Aaron Curbow, 34, were still booked into jail.

Sunday morning, the records listed Currie as “released” and also stated he had not posted bond.

The two men and one woman were arrested Thursday after investigators determined a deadly fire investigation at a Spicewood home was in fact a double homicide. Investigators found the bodies of Dorrine Reese and Thomas Wells who they believe lived in the home.

Clues led detectives to Currie and Curbow who were both were arrested on capital murder charges. Melissa Marie Frink, 33, was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence.

Officials have not shared a motive.
