Man flees crash; leaves kids, wife

AUSTIN (KXAN) – An Austin man is behind bars, accused of running from the scene of a crash after running through a red light and hitting another car.

Paul Andre Williams, 42, is charged with failure to stop and render aid.

Deputies say he hit a car on Johnny Morris Road on Wednesday, then ran from the scene. He left his two children and pregnant common-law wife behind, along with another passenger, in the 1999 Dodge Stratus. As he got out of the car, he threw beer cans away from the vehicle, according to police.

After the crash deputies say Williams called that passenger to check on his wife, who is pregnant with his 10th child, according to the affidavit.

The call was on speaker phone so the deputies investigating heard the conversation. They used it to identify Williams and arrested him when he went to University Medical Center Brackenridge to visit his wife.

Bond was set at $10,000.
