Juneteenth celebrations under way

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Juneteenth historical parade takes way Tuesday, celebrating the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas.

Juneteenth happens every year on June 19. It is the oldest national celebration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

The Juneteenth parade is open for the public and will affect area traffic conditions. During the event, the parade will also crowding at Rosewood Park.

The city of Austin encourages carpooling or using buses and bikes to get to these events.

For the fourth year, channelAustin comes together with artistic teens who will take the annual parade beyond East Austin and across Central Texas.

ChannelAustin is a digital media center available to everyone living in Austin.

The parade will broadcast live from channelAustin plus simulcast live in partnership with KLRU Q — which will be produced by teens with the Juneteenth Camp.

Juneteenth Camp will put the production control in the hands of the African-American Men Boys Harvest Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization that brings together African-American men as mentors and partners to the African-American youth.

These young people get to practice hands-on training with high-definition equipment that will coach them on how to produce a live show on parade day.

Tune in to channel 10 on Time Warner Cable and Grande Communications, or you can watch on ATT U-Verse on channel 99 starting at 10:30 a.m.

The Juneteenth Historical Parade will start at 10 a.m. on Comal Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard. There will be floats, bands, clowns and an auto show during the parade.

The park celebration will be at Rosewood Park and will start at noon and go on until 9 p.m. There will be children’s rides, games and music.

Doris Miller Auditorium will also be hosting a historical community program that starts at 12:15 p.m. and ends at 2 p.m.

This program begins right after the parade and includes dignitaries, keynotes, historical movements, poetry and praise dance.
