Energy assistance funds available to Leander residents struggling to pay for utilities

With temperatures in the triple digits, many people are struggling with how much to run their air conditioning systems within their limited budgets. And when that first bill comes during this heat wave, many will be shocked to realize it was much more expensive than they thought.

WBC Opportunities, the local community action non-profit organization, has an active Energy Assistance program to assist eligible individuals and families in paying their electric and gas bills.

“Large increases in electric or gas utility bills during extreme heat or cold can cause significant difficulties for those living on a limited income,” WBC Opportunities Executive Director Andrew Shell said. “Our Community Services staff will sit down with someone in need, see if they qualify for assistance, and help them from getting behind on their utility bills during these very hot days.”

For the elderly, oftentimes decisions must be made between air conditioning or medicines. Both are essential to their safety but can become too costly for those on a fixed income.

“While all eligible individuals and families are able to seek assistance, a portion of the program is restricted to help our elderly remain safe in their homes,” Shell continued.

To receive assistance, clients should call the local WBC Opportunities Community Services office to pre-qualify and make an appointment. Walk-ins are not accepted.

For those living in Georgetown, Andice, Florence, Jarrell, Liberty Hill, Leander, Theon, Weir, and Walburg, call 512-930-0873 to make an appointment.

Those living in Taylor, Hutto, Coupland, Granger, Thorndale, Thrall and the Williamson County portion of Bartlett, should call 512-352-5523 to make an appointment.
