One dead in shooting at Avery Ranch

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Austin police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened early Friday morning in Northwest Austin.

It happened outside a home in the Granite Shoals section of the Avery Ranch subdivision at the intersection of Avery Ranch Boulevard and Staked Plains Drive.

Police said it all started when an unidentified 23-year-old man crashed his car into a retaining wall along Avery Ranch Boulevard at 2:57 a.m. He then ran down the road to a home on Staked Plains Drive.

That’s where a resident confronted the man, shot and killed him.

Police said they are looking into what happened during this shooting and are not sure if the man was trying to break into the home.

Authorities said someone from inside the home did call 911 at 3:08 a.m. to report the shooting.

Police are talking to the shooter to get more information, and no charges have been filed at this time.

Leander ISD has been notified that students of Rutledge Elementary School will need to take an alternative route to get to school because a section of Staked Plains Drive is closed.

School will still operate on a normal schedule.
