Akins HS student killed in shooting

AUSTIN (KXAN) – An Akins High School student who said he was confronting suspected burglars was shot near his home early Sunday morning. He later died.

It happened in the 1500 block of Canon Yeomans Trail , near Manchaca Road and Slaughter Lane in South Austin.

Officers say Mark Brandon Dominguez, 17, was found lying in someone’s front yard with a gunshot wound.

According to witnesses, Dominguez and his two younger brothers heard suspicious noises outside and went to investigate what they believed to be a vehicle break-in. Around 12:45 a.m., when Dominguez confronted the two teenage boys a chase began. It ended with a fight, and police say one of the teenage suspects pulled out a gun and shot Dominguez.

A nurse who lived nearby performed CPR until paradmedics arrived. Dominguez was rushed to the hospital where he died later Sunday morning.

Officers launched a search on the ground and in the air for the two teenage suspects and found them in a taxi cab. Police said both were carrying guns.

They were transported to Gardner Betts Juvenile Detention Center. One is charged with murder, a first-degree felony, and both are charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon, a Class A misdemeanor.
