Texas Tribune Editor Offers Keen Political Insight to Round Rock Chamber of Commerce Members

Round Rock, Texas (August 23, 2011) — Texas Tribune Editor Ross Ramsey briefed 130 Round Rock Chamber of Commerce members and guests today on the outcomes of the 2011 Texas Legislative session and the upcoming 2012 election cycle.

Having guided five of his six emergency bills into law in 2011, Governor Rick Perry is well positioned to be a “viable candidate” for the Republication presidential nomination, Ramsey said. As in past years, Ramsey believes the Republication nominee will likely be known by February or March. He said the 2012 election will essentially be a referendum on President Obama’s performance.

Before turning to politics, Ramsey described the obstacles faced by the Texas Legislature going into the 2011 session, including a state budget deficit estimated as high as $28 billion, reduced sales tax revenue, a structural deficit, and previous reliance on the federal government’s stimulus plan. In spite of these challenges, he anticipates that 90-93 of the 101 incumbent Republicans in the Texas House will be reelected. He said the Governor’s decision to run for President sets off a chain reaction of opportunities for current elected officials to seek higher offices.

Pro-business advocacy, and helping local businesses stay abreast of trends and issues affecting businesses and the economy, are an important ongoing part of the mission of the Round Rock Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Partnership. Today’s luncheon was organized in part by the Chamber’s Legislative Committee, chaired by Lora Weber.

Sponsored by Minuteman Press, the August Power Lunch will soon be available for viewing on the Chamber’s YouTube channel.
