Texas Eagle train hits tractor-trailer in Hutto

The driver of a tractor-trailer was critically injured Sunday morning when his vehicle collided with an Amtrak passenger train in Hutto, north of Austin, officials said.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred around 10 a.m. on U.S. 79, just west of Texas 130, in Williamson County. Officials said the driver of the tractor-trailer, which was hauling a small vehicle, was taken to a hospital in Round Rock.

Although two of the 211 passengers on the Amtrak Texas Eagle reported being injured, they refused medical treatment, said spokesman Steve Kulm. The train had departed from San Antonio en route to Chicago around 7 a.m. Sunday, according to an online schedule.

Kulm was not sure how the crash occurred. By noon, passengers had been evacuated and were being transported to a nearby church. Kulm said chartered buses were being sent there to take them to Chicago or other destinations on the route
