HAMILTON, Texas (AP) — A man who allegedly tried to shoot his ex-wife but the weapon failed to fire has died in a gunbattle with Central Texas deputies.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office says the suspect died at the scene Friday. His name wasn’t immediately released.

Sheriff Gregg Bewley says no officers were hurt.

The incident started Friday afternoon at a bookstore near Hamilton, 60 miles west of Waco, when the man confronted his former wife.

Investigators say the woman reported that her ex-husband pointed a pistol at her but the gun failed to fire. She ran and called 911.

Deputies later located the suspect in a pickup truck. Officials say the man emerged with a rifle, refused to drop the weapon and pointed the gun at deputies.

Both sides began firing.
