Aud. Shores upgrade could move events

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Beaten down and dusty after years of joggers, dogs, and big events, Auditorium Shores may soon get a breath of fresh air.

Or more specifically, fresh grass.

C3 Presents is set to contribute $3.5 million as a part of a partnership with the city of Austin to reinvigorate Auditorium Shores, the park that plays host to many concerts and events throughout the year.

It is also one of the city’s most popular off-leash dog parks.

Currently, the park has large dusty areas of brown dirt splotched between patches of grass.

“It was never designed to sustain that heavy use,” said Marty Stump with Austin Parks and Recreation.

But the proposed upgrades include new grass, new irrigation systems, and a redesign of the dog park and bike trail which will keep joggers and dogs from interfering with one another.

However, the plan comes with somewhat of a catch.

“We do anticipate events will be relocated through the course of the construction,” said Stump. “We are working with event promoters to find alternative locations.”

The proposed changes would take approximately a year with a target completion sometime in early 2015.

That means events like Fun Fun Fun Fest and the Austin Reggae Festival might have to find a new home while improvements are being made.

Sixteen events over 25 days take place during the year at Auditorium Shores.

Transmission Entertainment is the company that organizes Fun Fun Fun Fest and owner James Moody released the following statement:

“We are in support of this investment, and in all parties contributing to the improvement of our parks system – but doing it in a balanced way that improves parks over time but does not eliminate or displace long time users and residents, just like the Zilker renovation for ACL Fest.”

The city council is expected to vote on the proposed changes on May 23rd.

Proposed plans do not anticipate closing the park to joggers during construction.
