AUSTIN (KXAN) – Noted author and documentary maker Dan Korem told state educators at the Texas Association of School Administrators Conference on Wednesday that they can stop trouble before it starts if they know what to look for.

Think schools have gotten more dangerous? You’re right.

Korem says, “In 1999 at the time of the Columbine shooting, 50 American students on average were caught with a gun or other weapon. Today it is 250 students, per day.”

Korem says about six percent of students have the dangerous combined character traits of being unconventional and paranoid.

He believes those students should be approached with flexibility and a nurturing comfort to make them feel safe.

He adds, “The difference between behavorial profiling and ethnic and racial stereotyping is you are observing behaviors and actions, not stereotyping based on a person’s race or ethnicity.”
