Wednesday, November 14, is National Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day, the annual salute to geospatial technology.  On this day, users of GIS technology demonstrate real-world applications that are transforming our society.  As part of National Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day and Geography Awareness Week, Williamson County staff will be hosting a map gallery in the District Courtroom in the Historic Williamson County Courthouse, 710 S. Main Street, on the square in Georgetown on Tuesday, November 13, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. This event is open to the public, and all are encouraged to attend. The map gallery will showcase maps used by many different county departments, and staff will be on hand to explain the different maps and applications of GIS technologies.

In addition, a proclamation also will be read at Commissioner’s Court on November 13 honoring GIS technology and encouraging the public to learn more about this technology.  A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts.

GIS technology enables government agencies, businesses, and citizens access to more accurate information in a timely manner and improve operations, information sharing, collaboration, and communication all while using less resources and operating more efficiently.

Also on Wednesday, November 14, the Williamson County GIS Council will conduct demonstrations and activities about the use of GIS technologies for elementary school children in partnership with Georgetown Independent School District.

These Williamson County GIS Council events include participants from Williamson County, the cities of Leander, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Round Rock, Hutto, Taylor, Williamson County Cities Health District, the Capital Area Council of Governments, Baker-Aicklen Associates, and the Williamson Central Appraisal District.
