Like a scene from The Birds

AUSTIN (KXAN) – It looks like a scene out of the move The Birds: hundreds of thousands of purple martin song birds have descended onto a few trees in Central Texas.

The birds are roosting near the Highland Mall in Northeast Austin, creating an amazing sight at sunset not unlike the bats that roost under the Congress Avenue bridge.

Soon, however, they will be gone.

Photojournalist Juan Rodriquez captured the sights and sounds of the beautiful migratory birds, as members of the local Audubun Society watch the migratory patterns.

The flocks will be over Highland Mall for the next week, and another watching party will be organized for next weekend. Purple martins migrate thousands of miles every year from Pennsylvania to Brazil.

In some states, the breed is threatened because of a dependence on man-made housing.
