Candidates spar in latest debate

CONCORD, N.H. (KXAN) – The candidates traded jabs Sunday morning in the NBC News – Facebook debate, the last before Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary.

Newt Gingrich went on the offensive against front-runner Mitt Romney, saying the former Massachusetts Governor of “pious baloney.”

“You’ve been running consistently for years and years and years. So this idea that suddenly citizenship showed up in your mind,” Gingrich said. “Just level with the American people. You’ve been running at least since the 1990s.”

Romney countered that he never thought he’d enter politics.

“I am in this race ’cause I care about the country,” he said.

Governor Perry almost immediately launched an attack, trying to differentiate himself from all of the candidates, with the exception of Jon Huntsman.

“I look from here down to Rick Santorum, I see insiders. Individuals who have been the big spending Republicans in Washington, D.C.,” he said.

Perry also took an opportunity to try to redeem his “Oops” moment from a November debate in Michigan.

“Well, let me answer the question that you asked earlier. What are the three areas that you would make some reductions where people would feel some pain,” Perry started. ” I would tell you, it would be those bureaucrats at the Department of Commerce and Energy and Education that we’re gonna do away with.”

Rick Santorum sparred with Texas Congressman Ron Paul about his record, and his anti-war stance.

“The serious issue with Congressman Paul here is he’s never really passed anything of any importance,” said Santorum, later adding, “The problem is that what Congressman Paul can do as commander-in-chief is he can on day one do what he says he wants to do, which is pull all of our troops back out of overseas”

“You know, change in foreign policy is significant, but that’s where a nation will come down if they keep doing this. We can’t say in 130 countries, get involved in nation building. We cannot have 900 bases overseas. We have to change policy,” Paul responded.Â
